WhatsApp crisis: MCMC puts Meta on the spot over hacked, blocked accounts

KUALA LUMPUR: Meta is set to respond to Malaysia's communications regulator today over mounting complaints involving WhatsApp accounts that users say have been hacked, blocked or rendered inaccessible.

Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil said the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has given Meta until 3pm today to respond after the company requested additional time to investigate the technical aspects of the cases.

"MCMC stated that Meta will respond this afternoon at 3pm. They have asked for some time to investigate technical aspects of the issue," he told reporters here today.

Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching said MCMC would meet Meta today following concerns over WhatsApp accounts that were affected.

MCMC confirmed that it has referred relevant cases to Meta for clarification.
