KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 7 — A 36-year-old woman has been arrested after a retired policeman and his wife were killed when their scooter collided with a car that had pulled out of the emergency lane following a driver swap.

Police are investigating whether the woman, who owns the Perodua Bezza, was driving or a passenger when the crash occurred on the North-South Expressway near Kuala Muda yesterday.

According to Sinar Harian, Kuala Muda district police chief ACP Hanyan Ramlan said the woman was detained to help establish the circumstances surrounding the collision.

The crash occurred at about noon at KM114.4 of the expressway, killing retired police sergeant Suhaimi Saidin, 64, and his wife Normah Hashim, 60.

The couple, who were travelling home to Bandar Utama on a Yamaha XMAX scooter, suffered severe head and body injuries and died at the scene.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the Bezza had stopped in the emergency lane before rejoining the left lane after its occupants switched drivers.

The couple’s scooter and another motorcycle subsequently collided with the car.

Two teenagers riding the second motorcycle were injured and taken to Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital for treatment.

“Initial information indicates that the vehicle had stopped and moved again after switching drivers,” Hanyan said.

“We are investigating whether she was driving or was a passenger at the time of the impact. The arrest is necessary to facilitate further inquiries.”

Police have appealed for witnesses, particularly motorists with dashcam footage of the crash, to come forward to assist investigations.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.
