Southern California Edison (EIX) won dismissal of key claims in a lawsuit alleging the utility contributed to the destruction of hundreds of homes in last year's Palisades Fire, Bloomberg reported Wednesday.
The ruling by a Los Angeles Superior Court judge allowed some claims to proceed in a lawsuit by property owners accusing SoCal Edison (EIX) of failing to properly fireproof its utility poles but rejected the claim of inverse condemnation, stating the utility poles themselves did not cause the fire and were instead located in the path of the fire.
The property owners had argued the company was liable because it failed to fireproof its utility poles with protective fire mesh, but the judge disagreed.
A negligence claim against Edison (EIX) survived but was narrowed to only those property owners who listed Malibu as the location of their property.
