PNP logs 27 deaths amid torrential rains

MANILA, Philippines — At least 27 deaths were recorded by the Philippine National Police (PNP) amid the inclement weather brought by the southwest monsoon.
In a document shared with reporters by PNP public information chief Col. Allen Rae Co, the agency’s police regional offices (PROs) recorded the following fatalities as of 10 a.m. on Monday, August 17:
PRO Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR)

- A 66-year-old man died due to a landslide in La Trinidad, Benguet.
- A 31-year-old man died due to a landslide in La Trinidad, Benguet.
- A 12-year-old boy died due to a landslide in Baguio City.
- An 8-year-old girl died due to a landslide in Baguio City.
- A 12-year-old boy died due to a landslide in Baguio City.
- A man died due to a landslide in Baguio City.
- A man died due to a landslide in Atok, Benguet.
- A 7-year-old girl died due to a landslide in Baguio City.
- A 12-year-old girl died due to a landslide in Baguio City.
- A man died due to a landslide in Atok, Benguet.
- A woman died due to a landslide in Baguio City.

The PNP also recorded 14 injured persons in CAR and two each in NCR and Calabarzon.
It also recorded one missing-person case each in NCR and Calabarzon.

Co previously explained that the PNP’s data comes from its regional units and is still subject to validation.
For security measures and response efforts, the PNP’s tally showed that 166 personnel were deployed to the affected regions, with 117 deployed to evacuation centers and 10,785 more police officers on standby.

The national police force also noted that it monitored 14,437 individuals taking shelter in 244 evacuation centers. /mcm
