Beginning as an original television show in 1978, the Battlestar Galactica universe soon grew into a cultural phenomenon, with everyone having heard of it even if they had never experienced the sci-fi franchise itself. With the first series going onto inspire a sequel series, Galactica 1980, as well as multiple book adaptations, original novels, board games, comics, video games, and more, it has shown no signs of slowing down in recent years with many reboots bringing the series to the modern age.

Set in the distant universe where human civilization has extended to a group of planets known as the Twelve Colonies, the story follows its inhabitants as they engage in a lengthy war with a cybernetic race known as the Cylons.

With a whole universe to explore, it is no wonder that the franchise has never run out of a story to tell, but now, Battlestar Galactica is about to return in a surprise new release.

Announced by Ghost Galaxy, Battlestar Galactica: The Board Game will offer fans of the sci-fi franchise a physical way to experience the story like never before. However, you may be thinking: did this game not already exist?

In which case, you would be correct. Set to launch in 2027, Battlestar Galactica: The Board Game is a reprinted version of the 2008 release of the same name. Originally designed by Corey Konieczka and launched back in the early 2000s courtesy of Fantasy Flight Games, the board game met critical acclaim, even going onto welcome three expansions.

Since then, Ghost Galaxy has been working hard behind the scenes to bring Battlestar Galactica: The Board Game to the modern age, and the updated version of the classic board game will be launched via crowdfunding in early 2027.

“I had the pleasure to oversee the publication of this phenomenal board game during its first lease on life," said Christian T. Petersen, CEO of Ghost Galaxy (and former CEO and founder of Fantasy Flight Games). “We’re having a lot of fun returning to the great characters and story of Battlestar Galactica, and we’re working hard to ensure that our new edition will make a great game design even better!”

“We’re thrilled to have Ghost Galaxy take on this classic game," said Bill Altig, SVP of Narrative Games at Fantasy Flight Games. “We can’t wait to see it back in print.”

In the semi-cooperative board game, players were tasked with choosing between pilots, political leaders, military leaders, or engineers as they served as the crew on the Galactica. At the start of each game, players were given a loyalty card which would determine if they were human or Cylon, alongside a myriad of skill cards based on their character's abilities.

If players maintain their food stores, fuel levels, ship morale, and population, and get the Galactica to Earth in one piece, the humans will win. However, if the Cylon players manage to reveal their true identities and bring down the ship, they will win instead.

In a game centered around mistrust, intrigue, and the struggle for survival, Battlestar Galactica: The Board Game not only offers an engaging experience for Battlestar Galactica fans, but also board game fans in general, and so, make sure to stay tuned to learn more about the crowdfunding which begins early next year.
