Peacock's new 8-part horror series starring Linda Cardellini is officially the perfect Halloween binge, launching a new Friday the 13th franchise era. Released in full on Thursday, October 15, there are few, if any, better new streaming series to binge-watch this weekend than this, especially if you're looking for something tailor-made for spooky season. The Peacock and A24 production debuted to a strong 74% Rotten Tomatoes score and is positioned to be one of the most popular new shows this weekend across all streaming services.

Crystal Lake has officially arrived on Peacock and is the best new horror series worth binge-watching this weekend. All eight episodes are available to stream right now, making it easy to start and finish by the end of the weekend. Crystal Lake is the first-ever prequel series in the historic Friday the 13th franchise, which famously features one of horror's most iconic slasher killers, the hockey mask-wearing Jason Voorhees. Fresh off her Emmy win for DTF St. Louis, Cardellini stars as Jason's mother, Pamela Voorhees, who is distraught after her son's infamous drowning death at Crystal Lake summer camp.

Crystal Lake is not the first television series in the Friday the 13th franchise – that was Friday the 13th: The Series, which ran from 1987 to 1990 – but it is the first to explore Pamela Voorhees' origin story in extensive detail on screen. The original 1980 Friday the 13th film provided the foundation for Jason's origins at Crystal Lake summer camp in New Jersey, noting that Pamela was a cook at the camp and drowned in 1957, which she blamed on negligent camp counselors. These details are replicated in the first episode of Peacock's Crystal Lake series, although the timeline jumps up to the early 1970s.

Question 1 of 3

While Jason Voorhees is undoubtedly the face of the Friday the 13th franchise, Crystal Lake keeps its spotlight more firmly on Pamela and her response to Jason's horrific death by drowning. After two counselors leave a group of campers swimming in the lake, a young Jason tries to fetch a ball that floated out past the swimming area, even though he was not a good swimmer. Determined to retrieve the ball so that his camp bullies would be nicer to him, Jason makes the fateful decision to swim without supervision, ultimately succumbing to the depths of Crystal Lake. Afterward, Pamela refuses to believe that Jason is dead and quickly turns the community against her.

Crystal Lake Is The Best New Horror Show To Binge-Watch This Weekend

Crystal Lake is made in the same fashion and spirit as the classic Friday the 13th movies, and its vintage horror style is one of its most enjoyable aspects right from the moment you press play. Fans of the legendary horror franchise will instantly recognize it as part of the greater Friday the 13th universe, with signature cinematography and sound effects to match. The series genuinely transports viewers back in time with its grainy image and detailed set design, adding to the overall immersion of Crystal Lake and Pamela's downward spiral.

Crystal Lake is the best new horror series to binge-watch this weekend because it is genuinely new material, as opposed to Prime Video's Carrie, which serves more as an adaptation of its source novel. A dark secret from Pamela's past makes itself known within the premiere episode, sending the narrative down an unexpected and intriguing path full of twists, tension, and, naturally, gore.

Make no mistake – even though Jason is portrayed as a child in Crystal Lake, the series is still a full-fledged horror, with plenty of blood and guts to satisfy all lovers of the original movie series. For these reasons and more, Crystal Lake is without a doubt the best new show to binge-watch this weekend to truly get into the Halloween spirit.
