Elizabeth Moselakgomo honoured with special runs and walks

The devastating passing of fitness enthusiast Elizabeth Mokolo Moselakgomo, has motivated running clubs in Johannesburg to dedicate special runs and walks in her honour.

The 38-year-old went missing after an afternoon routine run in her neighbourhood in Kempton Park. Her disappearance gripped the nation, with many hoping for her safe return.

Sadly, the search came to a close on 14 September 2026, when her family identified her body at the Germiston mortuary.

She was the fourth victim among several women who were recently murdered around the Kempton Park area.

It was Moselakgomo’s 8-year-old daughter who alerted family members when her mother did not return home from her run on 9 September.

WALKS AND RUNS DEDICATED TO TSONTSO

On 15 September 2026, the Waterfall City Athletics Club organised a 05:00 AM run under their In Her Honour Run initiative, dedicated to Elizabeth, fondly known as Tsontso.

The colour scheme was black, and the club’s Instagram reel was shot entirely in black-and-white, respecting the sombreness of the tribute.

Beyond this tribute, the club stated that the In Her Honour initiative is aimed at promoting women’s safety by fostering a culture of running together, supporting and looking out for one another.

“In Her Honour is our reminder that women deserve to feel safe on the road. It is about running together, looking out for one another and standing with our women — not only on Tuesdays, but every day. This Tuesday, Waterfall City Athletics Club dedicates our In Her Honour Run to Tsontso.”

Run Alex, another running club based in Johannesburg, has planned a 5 km Solidarity Walk in memory of Elizabeth.

The walk is scheduled for 5:30 PM on 15 September at the Kwabhekilanga Sports Ground. Participants are advised to wear black.

WHO WAS ELIZABETH MOSELAKGOMO?

There was more to Moselakgomo than the circumstances under which she became known for. During a media briefing on 14 September, her uncle and family spokesperson, Lt-Col Andries Matlaila, described her as the “glue of the family” who loved music.

She worked as a centre manager at Festival Mall and was devoted a churchgoer.

The family will finalise funeral arrangements once the police complete the necessary processes. The service will take place in Mpumalanga, where the family is originally from.
