RI Govt prepares one million tons of rice to curb price hikes

Palembang (ANTARA) - The government has prepared one million tons of rice under the Food Supply and Price Stabilization (SPHP) program to anticipate rising rice prices and maintain people's purchasing power, Coordinating Minister for Food Affairs Zulkifli Hasan said.
Speaking during a food assistance distribution event in Palembang on Wednesday, Zulkifli said the policy was introduced in anticipation of a potential decline in rice production due to a prolonged dry season, which could affect rice supplies and market prices.
The provision of subsidized rice had been discussed with several relevant ministries, namely the Coordinating Ministry for Food Affairs, the Agriculture Ministry, and the Finance Ministry, and had received approval from the president.
"We have made the decision in meetings involving the coordinating minister, the agriculture minister, and the finance minister, and it has been approved by the president. We are preparing one million tons. That amounts to one billion kilograms of subsidized rice," he said.
He explained that the rice would be distributed through the SPHP program at a subsidized price of Rp12,500 per kilogram, below prevailing market prices of between Rp15,000 and Rp17,000 per kilogram.
"While rice sells for Rp15,000 to Rp17,000 per kilogram in the market, the government subsidizes it so that it can be sold for Rp12,500. The rice is called SPHP rice," he said.
Zulkifli added that people could obtain SPHP rice through outlets operated by state-owned logistics company Perum Bulog and traditional markets included in the subsidized rice distribution network.
