Father, son die, seven injured in Plateau road crash

Translate

A man and his son have died, while seven other people sustained injuries in a road crash in Plateau State.

The accident involved a bus, a commercial tricycle and a saloon car in Sabon Barki, Jos South Local Government Area.

The crash occurred at about 4:20 p.m. on Sunday along Bukuru Express Road when the bus reportedly collided with the tricycle and the saloon car, causing the tricycle to catch fire.

The victims were reportedly returning from church when the crash occurred.

The Public Relations Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Plateau State, Yakubu Longsan, said two people died at the scene after being trapped in the burning tricycle.

Mr Longsan attributed the crash to overspeeding and reckless driving, adding that the injured victims were taken to the Plateau State Specialist Hospital’s orthopaedic facility, Porter’s Orthopaedic Hospital, in Jos, for treatment.

He said the driver of the bus fled the scene, adding that efforts were underway to trace him.

A witness, Kefas Gyang, said he arrived at the scene shortly after the crash and found people struggling to rescue the occupants of the burning tricycle.

He said the intensity of the fire made it difficult for bystanders to rescue those trapped inside.

Mr Gyang, however, clarified that he did not witness the collision.

He said the deceased man’s wife sustained a broken leg, while the couple’s other child and the tricycle rider were among those taken to hospital for treatment.

The FRSC urged motorists to avoid overspeeding and reckless driving and advised passengers to caution drivers whenever they notice dangerous driving.
