Bengals' Ja'Marr Chase suffers concussion after getting his facemask pulled and taking huge hit

Julian Edelman gives Joe Burrow a list of names from the Bengals organization to play word association with including Ja'Marr Chase, Tee Higgins, and Dexter Lawrence.

The Cincinnati Bengals’ offense took a huge hit on Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Putting quarterback Joe Burrow's first-half interception to the side for a second, the team really couldn’t afford to lose anyone on the offense. Burrow, Ja’Marr Chase, Tee Higgins and Mike Gesicki are just some of the integral parts of what makes Cincinnati’s offense run.

When a play like the one that happened to Chase comes, Bengals fans have to have had a pit in their stomachs.

Chase caught a routine pass on the left side of the field in the second quarter. He tried to make a move around Jaguars cornerback Jarrian Jones. Instead, Jones grabbed a handful of Chase’s facemask, ripping it around the star wide receiver’s head. Chase shook off Jones’ grip but he took a huge hit from linebacker Ventrell Miller. Jones was penalized for grabbing the facemask.

Chase went down and that would be the last bit of action he would see.

The Bengals announced that Chase was being evaluated for a concussion and was questionable to return. The team said at the start of the second half that Chase would miss the remainder of the game.

He had three catches for 37 yards.

Cincinnati was only able to muster three points against the Jaguars in the first half, which may speak more to Jacksonville’s relentless defense to start the 2026 season than Cincinnati’s offense. Regardless, Chase’s injury is a huge hole in the offense – that part doesn’t really need to be said.

Burrow found Gesicki for a touchdown on the Bengals’ first drive of the second half as they looked to get back in the game.

Chase, a five-time Pro Bowler, got back into form over the last two weeks. He had 16 catches for 173 yards and three touchdowns in the last two games.
