Mohamad Hasan set for high-level meetings at UNGA

NEW YORK: Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan is set to attend a series of high-level meetings and hold bilateral talks during the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.

Malaysia's Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN), Datuk Nadzirah Osman, said the meetings reflected Malaysia's continued standing on the international stage and its active role in discussing various global issues.

"Tomorrow, Mohamad is scheduled to attend the Peacebuilding Commission meeting, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation Annual Coordination Meeting of Foreign Ministers and the 2026 Ministerial Meeting in Support of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees.

"He is also scheduled to attend the High-Level Meeting on Addressing Existential Threats posed by Sea-Level Rise," she said at a media briefing here today.

Nadzirah said Mohamad was also scheduled to deliver the National Statement at the Joint Ministerial Meeting of Arab and Islamic countries on Jerusalem and meet UN Secretary-General António Guterres on Sept 25.

On the same day, he will attend the High-Level Meeting on Pandemic Prevention, Preparedness and Response, and the 50th Annual Meeting of Foreign Ministers of the Group of 77 and China.

Mohamad will also attend the Ministerial Extraordinary Meeting of The Hague Group in Defence of International Law and the High-Level Meeting of the Group of Friends of the United Nations Alliance of Civilisations.

He is also scheduled to hold bilateral meetings and receive courtesy calls from foreign ministers and prominent figures from Nepal, Iran, Kuwait, Ghana, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Algeria.

Nadzirah said the bilateral meetings were important in strengthening relations with Malaysia and building a common understanding of regional and global issues of mutual interest.

She said discussions would depend on the priorities of each country, including technical cooperation and efforts to enhance the effectiveness of the UN system.

Nadzirah said a significant portion of the discussions was also expected to focus on the UN80 Initiative, which aims to strengthen the efficiency and effectiveness of the UN in addressing current global challenges.
