Anwar: Malaysian households using up to 800kWh exempt from AFA, Retail Charge and SST on electricity bills until Dec 31 amid haze, heat

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 17 — The government has expanded electricity bill protection for domestic users from 600 kilowatt-hours (kWh) to 800kWh a month from September to December 31, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said in a Facebook post today.

He said the measure was an immediate step to ease the cost-of-living pressures faced by households, particularly as haze and hotter weather have driven up electricity consumption in some homes.

Under the expanded protection, domestic users consuming up to 800kWh a month will be exempted from the Automatic Fuel Adjustment (AFA), Retail Charge and Sales and Service Tax (SST).

Anwar also expressed his appreciation to Tenaga Nasional Bhd, the Energy Transition and Water Transformation Ministry (Petra) and the Energy Commission for enabling the measure to be implemented quickly.

He said the recent haze and warmer weather had contributed to increased electricity consumption among some households, causing their monthly usage to exceed 600kWh and resulting in unusually higher bills.

“The Madani Government will continue to closely monitor developments in fuel costs and current energy market conditions to ensure that any decisions related to electricity tariffs take into account the balance between affordability and the people’s cost of living, electricity supply security and the sustainability of the national energy sector,” he said.
