Action fans generally eat well at any given time. Even if no games are coming out (and there are, especially with Onimusha: Way of the Sword), there's a classic on Steam to grab. If you want a dungeon crawler, that's even easier to find.

That said, not all action games are equal. Some are a cut above the rest, providing frenetic, responsive combat while offering up a unique world that really draws you in. Capcom is arguably the king of this in recent years, up to and including Resident Evil Requiem, Pragmata, and the aforementioned new Onimusha.

On Steam now, you can find a game that mixes Dungeon Crawler Carl and Dead Rising, with its own signature sense of style.

Action Fans Unite

Stupid Never Dies Boss Battle

Coming out on October 21, Stupid Never Dies is a zombie-oriented action game by developer GPTRACK50, which consists of veteran members, some of whom worked on the Devil May Cry series. You'll play Davy, a weak zombie in love with a frozen girl, as you try to bring her back to life. To get stronger, you'll consume monster cores, stealing their powers in the process.

Here's the premise, which sounds massively intriguing if you're remotely a fan of action: "Control Davy, the weakest zombie imaginable, and battle through a mysterious dungeon to defeat KOM, the King of Monsters. Every dive makes Davy grow stronger faster. Customize his body, devour powerful monsters, steal their abilities, and race against time to conquer the dungeon. Created by GPTRACK50, a studio founded by veteran action game developers, Stupid Never Dies is a unique single-player 3D action RPG combining fast-paced growth, bizarre humor, and stylish action."

I had the chance to try out Stupid Never Dies and found it very akin to a Suda51 or Swery game: full of personality, with a ground-up combat system you really need to dive into to appreciate. It's very linear in the sense that it's a true dungeon-based adventure, but combat seems varied enough through the unique styles and abilities you can acquire, some through biting enemies and taking their cores.

It's one to watch if you're a fan of the developers I mentioned above. If the team can mix up the dungeon-delving formula and open it up a bit, letting players experiment with multiple builds at once, it could be something special. Combat has a low floor but a high ceiling, and Davy's strange animations and playstyle differ from most character action experiences.

The Stupid Never Dies: First Bite Demo Is Live

Stupid Never Dies Battle Blown Back

If you're remotely interested in this stylish action romp, a free demo called "First Bite" is free on Steam. It gives you a sense of the game's opening and setting, and showcases the parry/bite-based combat system. Thankfully, save data is confirmed to carry over to the full edition, so you won't waste any time playing it.

Steam has a ton of action games to choose from, but there, the style alone really sells Stupid Never Dies. We'll find out if it will fully deliver come October.
