‘Fake Skating’ Feature Adaptation At Sony Taps Amélie Hoeferle and Graham Campbell To Star

EXCLUSIVE: Sony Pictures and Will Gluck’s Olive Bridge Entertainment have tapped Amélie Hoeferle and Graham Campbell to star in Fake Skating adaptation. Based on Lynn Painter’s New York Times best-selling book, Deadline recently broke the news that Josh Boone would direct. Morgan Lehmann and Victoria Bata penned the first draft of the script with Boone and his writing partner Knate Lee handling revisions.

Set for a summer release next year, Fake Skating is an emotional high school hockey romance about childhood sweethearts whose icy reunion in their hockey-loving hometown unexpectedly thaws when they fake a romantic relationship.

Deadline first reported the studio coming on to the project this past March and moved fast to get Boone on board once they heard he was high on the project. Once the greenlight was given, Boone spent the remainder of the summer testing actors for its two leads with Boone and execs ultimately landing on the two rising stars.

Painter is the #1 New York Times and internationally best-selling author of Better Than the Movies, The Do-Over, Betting on You, Maid For Each Other, First and Forever, Nothing Like the Movies, and Fake Skating. Winner of the 2025 Goodreads Choice Award for Young Adult Fiction, Fake Skating has nearly 500,000 copies in print and has appeared on the New York Times YA Hardcover Bestseller list 48 times since its release in September 2025, holding the #1 spot for 15 of those weeks. The novel has also been translated into 16 languages.

Netflix is working on a film adaptation of Painter’s Better Than The Movies, directed by Julia Hart and starring David Iacono and Beatrice Kitsos.

Gluck and Jacqueline Monetta are producing and Madison Jones is executive producing on behalf of Olive Bridge Entertainment. Painter will also serve as an executive producer.

Hoeferle stars in the hit young adult series Sterling Point on Prime. Her other credits include Eddington and The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes. She is repped by Gersh, Affirmative Entertainment, The Lede Company, and Jackoway Austen.

Campbell gained attention in the Tony Award-winning play Appropriate opposite Sarah Paulson. Recently, he can be seen in FX’s The Shards and the critically acclaimed film Late Fame which premiered at the Venice Film Festival and just released in theaters by Magnolia. He is repped by CAA, Anonymous Content, The Lede Company and Jackoway Austen.
