Johor Gleneagles Hospital expands university partnerships to nurture future nurses

KUALA LUMPUR: Johor Gleneagles Hospital plans to expand its partnerships with universities and educational institutions to offer more sponsorship opportunities to students pursuing nursing careers.

It said the initiative builds on the hospital's existing collaborations with Nilai University and Universiti Selangor (Unisel) under its Nursing Sponsorship Programme.

"Selected students receive support covering tuition fees, monthly allowances and medical benefits throughout their studies. The programme also provides a pathway to employment at the hospital after graduation," it said in a statement.

Since its introduction in 2022, the programme has supported 248 students. Of these, 51 have graduated, with 17 already joining Johor Gleneagles Hospital.

The remaining 34 graduates, who completed their studies in 2026, are expected to join the hospital. Another 197 sponsored students are currently pursuing their nursing education.

Johor Gleneagles Hospital chief operating officer Thanabalan Muthaliar said investing in aspiring nurses early was essential to developing the future nursing workforce.

"Developing the nursing workforce of the future requires us to invest in talent early. By working with educational institutions, we can support students during their training and help prepare them for the realities of patient care.

"We want to build on what we have established with our existing university partners and work with more institutions to create opportunities for aspiring nurses," he said.

Beyond financial sponsorship, the hospital offers nurses exposure to specialised areas of care, opportunities to strengthen their clinical skills and access to continuous professional development throughout their careers.

The education-to-employment approach forms part of the hospital's long-term efforts to develop Malaysian nursing talent and strengthen the healthcare workforce.

As part of IHH Healthcare Malaysia's network of 18 hospitals nationwide, Johor Gleneagles Hospital also contributes to the group's broader efforts to develop healthcare professionals who can meet the changing needs of patients and communities across Malaysia.
