A service member fell during a pregame aerial demonstration in San Antonio on Saturday night and later died at a hospital, according to military officials and video verified by NBC News.

Video recorded from the stands shows the service member descending on a rope from the stadium’s rafters before falling to the field. Spectators are seen watching the field at the stadium in downtown San Antonio, where the University of Texas at San Antonio defeated the Naval Academy after a delayed kickoff.

The service member, who was not identified, was transported to a local hospital and later died, a Nellis Air Force Base spokesperson said in a statement.

The incident is under investigation. The service member was assigned to the U.S. Air Force’s 6th Combat Training Squadron, Detachment 2, according to the statement.

An individual raced from the sidelines toward the service member as he laid lifeless at the 50-yard line. The service member was driven off the field in a golf cart as fans watched in horror.

The University of Texas at San Antonio had scheduled events at the game to honor service members and veterans.

“We are deeply saddened by the incident that occurred at the start of tonight’s football game,” UT-San Antonio said in a statement Saturday night. “Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with the soldier who was affected, his family and his military colleagues.”

The city of San Antonio, which owns the Alamodome, did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Sunday.
