Whereas the buildup to Avengers: Infinity War was careful and calculated, the buildup to Avengers: Doomsday has been a little rushed. Until a couple of years ago, the Marvel Cinematic Universe was building toward a movie called Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, which was ultimately scrapped when it became clear that no one cared about the Kang storyline (and Kang’s actor was convicted of assault).

So, the setup for Doomsday has been confined to a couple of post-credit scenes. We saw the Fantastic Four’s ship appear in the Thunderbolts’ orbit, then we saw Doctor Doom approach Franklin Richards. Most recently, the rest of the Doomsday setup has been crammed into a money-grubbing re-release of Avengers: Endgame. Avengers: Endgame Encore had a bunch of credits scenes stacked on top of each other: Bruce Banner in a holding cell; Loki recruiting Steve Rogers; Doom forging his mask; something with the TVA.

Even Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Marvel’s biggest movie since Endgame, barely touched on Doomsday. The film ended with a cryptic clue as to Spidey’s whereabouts during the next Avengers saga, and that was it. Next week, Marvel Studios is set to release the last MCU project before Doomsday: a little show called VisionQuest.

VisionQuest's Release Schedule Explained In Full

Vision putting on a hat in VisionQuest

Starring Paul Bettany as a human embodiment of Vision and James Spader as a human embodiment of Ultron, VisionQuest is the third and final chapter in the trilogy of shows that started with WandaVision and continued in Agatha All Along. Whereas WandaVision was a fantasy sitcom and Agatha All Along was a musical horror homage, VisionQuest is an oddball sci-fi buddy story about all of Tony Stark’s A.I. creations hanging out in Vision’s mind palace.

VisionQuest will drop its first two episodes on Disney+ on October 14, then air the next six episodes weekly until November 25, when the finale drops. The story will follow Vision as he tries to figure out who he is through his communications with Tony’s other A.I. personas, including Avengers-level threat Ultron, and goes on the lam with a mysterious teen who may be his reincarnated son.

VisionQuest Is Marvel's Last Chance For Doomsday Setup

Vision and Ultron in VisionQuest

VisionQuest is Marvel Studios’ last chance to set up Avengers: Doomsday. After that, it’s up to the movie to explain itself when it hits theaters on December 18 (December 16 in the UK). So far, it seems like we have all the pieces we need: Doom is destroying universes, Loki is stepping in in his capacity as God of Stories, Steve is coming back, Thor is coming back, the Fox X-Men are there, the Hulk is involved somehow, and the Fantastic Four are coming to Earth-616.

But if there’s anything left, anything at all, that we need to know before Avengers: Doomsday — any teases or character reveals or story setups — then VisionQuest is Marvel’s last chance to give it to us. VisionQuest is mostly disconnected from the characters and properties involved in Doomsday, so it’s unlikely that there will be any meaningful setup in the show.

It’s more likely that VisionQuest is setting up the Young Avengers and/or Champions project that the MCU is slowly but surely building to. After WandaVision introduced Billy and Tommy Maximoff as constructs of Wanda’s grief-stricken imagination, Agatha All Along turned Billy into a rich and complex young adult, and VisionQuest is fixing to do the same for Tommy. By the time the WandaVision trilogy is complete, both Maximoff boys will be ready to join Kamala Khan and Kate Bishop and Cassie Lang on the Young Avengers squad.

VisionQuest will debut on Disney+ with a two-episode premiere on October 14. After that, it’s full steam ahead on the road to Avengers: Doomsday.
