Indonesia champions seafarer protection, shipping safety at IMO

Translate

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing seafarer protection and safeguarding international shipping lanes during the 138th session of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council in London, United Kingdom.

"Indonesia believes that the protection of seafarers and the safety of navigation must be a shared priority," Acting Director General of Sea Transportation at the Transportation Ministry Samsuddin said in a statement on Thursday (November 5).

The Indonesian delegation, participating in the November 2 to 6, 2026, sessions at IMO headquarters, emphasized that civilian mariners must be shielded amid global geopolitical tensions.

Led by Indonesian Ambassador to the United Kingdom Desra Percaya, the delegation included Deputy Head of Mission Sahadatun Donatirin, Transportation Attaché Kanti Pinakesti Tjahjono and other officials.

The high-level talks, opened by IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez, addressed key agenda items including organizational governance, strategy, human resources, financial reporting, and the protection of vital shipping lanes.

During discussions on maritime routes, Jakarta emphasized the necessity of ensuring the safety of seafarers as civilians and respecting freedom of navigation under international law and the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

Indonesia also urged stronger cooperation between coastal states and the UN maritime body, urging a diplomatic framework prioritizing de-escalation and dialogue over conflict to maintain uninterrupted global supply chains.

"All parties must exercise restraint, ensure the safety of seafarers and refrain from obstructing humanitarian aid or the repatriation of seafarers," Samsuddin said.

He noted that Indonesia's active involvement in the council reflects its broader strategic commitment to sustainable global maritime governance.

"Through the IMO forum, Indonesia will continue to voice its national maritime interests while contributing to the development of a global shipping ecosystem that is safe, equitable, and sustainable," Samsuddin added.
