Actress Lena Dunham has embraced motherhood for the first time, welcoming a baby girl with her husband, musician Luis Felber. The 40-year-old Girls star and Felber, also 40, have been married since 2021.

The couple’s journey to parenthood involved surrogacy, which Dunham has detailed in a heartfelt essay for Vogue.

Lena Dunham opens up about her surrogacy experience

In her essay, Lena Dunham reflected on the emotional and physical journey of working with a surrogate, beginning with the embryo transfer. Describing the moment, she wrote, “It was a mild November morning when I found myself kneeling by an exam table, fresh off a red-eye – with a rictus grin of anxious enthusiasm plastered on the lower half of my face while my eyes filled with anxious tears – clutching the hand of a woman I had met in person only twice.

”She also recalled the first time she met her surrogate, accompanied by her mother. “We sat in a coffee shop in Cobble Hill holding our matchas like props as we talked – about our lives, her children, the reasons she wanted to undertake this ‘journey,’ as they so love to call it in fertility medicine,” she wrote.Lena Dunham admitted that she had wondered whether she would feel jealous of the woman carrying her child, someone who could “carry her safely in her body, use her form to feed and house her, regulate the baby's ever-evolving nervous system with steadiness, heart, and breath.”

Instead, she said she felt reassured knowing that her daughter would be “tucked into someone who radiated such safety.”

Shopping for her baby girl

Once the pregnancy was confirmed, Lena Dunham began shopping for baby clothes, drawing on her past experience working at a children’s boutique. “I'd be lying if I said I hadn't been thinking about this part,” she wrote.Much of her essay touched on finding a balance between playful outfits and excessive cuteness.

She described her preference for “clothing that was playful but didn't lead with too much wink-wink cuteness.”

The baby’s arrival, 13 days late

In her essay, Dunham revealed that her baby’s arrival did not go exactly as planned, with the birth taking place 13 days after the due date. By then, the couple’s temporary housing near their surrogate was no longer available, while Dunham’s work commitments were also piling up.Still, when the moment finally arrived, she described it vividly, “I sat on a hospital bed, between the legs of a woman I hadn't known a year ago, waiting for a glimpse of this person who I had been waiting for with something related to patience, but also none at all.”While she did not disclose her daughter’s name or exact birth date, Dunham described the emotion of the moment as feeling “bashful and dizzy with joy.”

Lena Dunham’s road to motherhood was shaped by a long fertility struggle. At 31, she underwent a hysterectomy due to complications from endometriosis, a decision she also wrote about in an earlier Vogue essay.Speaking on NBC’s TODAY earlier this year, she explained that persistent pain ultimately led her to undergo the procedure.
