Race To Dubai: Rory McIlroy Chases Record-Equalling Eighth Title Against Eugenio Chacarra And Patrick Reed

Rory McIlroy has won the Race to Dubai seven times. One more would equal Colin Montgomerie's all-time record for European Tour order of merit titles, and he has never been shy about wanting it. But after a rough weekend at the DP World India Championship, where he finished 10 shots off the pace, the path to that record has narrowed considerably. Three events remain. McIlroy is skipping the Genesis Championship in South Korea this week, leaving him only the final two tournaments in the UAE to close a gap that sits at nearly 950 points. The math is not impossible. It is not comfortable either.
Chacarra in the Driver's Seat
Eugenio Chacarra has turned a quietly impressive season into a legitimate Race to Dubai campaign. The Spaniard won three times on the DP World Tour this year, including the KLM Open, the Italian Open, and most recently the India Championship, where he finished at 14 under to claim the title and the top spot in the standings. He now leads Reed by 618 points and McIlroy by 948. His next stop is South Korea, an event neither Reed nor McIlroy will play, which means his lead could grow before the UAE swing even begins. He also leads Ryder Cup qualifying, so the stakes extend well beyond this season's trophy.
Reed and McIlroy Both Have Something to Prove
Patrick Reed has led the standings for most of the year, holding the top spot since February after back-to-back wins at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic and the Qatar Masters in January. He confirmed he will play the season finale at Jumeirah Golf Estates despite a left wrist injury suffered at the BMW PGA Championship last month. Reed would become only the second American to finish as European number one, after Collin Morikawa in 2021. McIlroy, meanwhile, said he remains motivated regardless of who stands in his way. He has won four Race to Dubai titles in a row at one point and knows how to close a season in the Gulf. Whether that history is enough to overcome a nearly 1,000-point deficit in two events is the question now.
