Road crash injuries fall 15% in September as police intensify TraffiTech-GH sensitisation

The number of people injured in road crashes across Ghana fell by 15.02% in September 2026 compared with the same period last year, the Director of Education, Research and Training at the Police Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Alexander Kwaku Obeng, has disclosed.

He attributed the decline to increased sensitisation and caution notices sent to motorists under the TraffiTech-GH pilot project.

ACP Obeng said the police recorded 1,194 people injured in road crashes in September this year, down from 1,405 in September 2025.

“Within twenty days of September this year, when we enhanced sensitisation, gathering evidence and confronting vehicle owners with it with an embedded message, with GPS, MTTD sender ID sending messages saying ‘speed kills, reduce it now’ with your vehicle number, time and place of the offence,” he said on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Wednesday, October 28.

He said a comparison of crash data for the two periods showed a significant change in driver behaviour.

“If you compare the data of crashes from September last year (2025) with the same period this year, we have seen a significant change in behaviour of drivers,” he added.

ACP Obeng also disclosed that road crashes declined from 1,108 in September 2025 to 1,003 in September 2026, representing a 9.4% reduction.

The number of vehicles involved in crashes also fell from 1,928 to 1,693, a decline of 12.19%.

TraffiTech-GH is currently under a pilot project and has not yet been rolled out nationwide. TraffiTech-GH is an automated system developed by the Ghana Police Service to enforce road traffic laws and regulations and improve road safety in the country.

The system uses cameras and sensors to automatically take a picture and or video of vehicles that flout road traffic laws and regulations, such as speeding and running a red light
