Brandon Sanderson’s The Stormlight Archive is making an official comeback soon, and it has already proven to be a complete success. It’s a huge moment for the fantasy and sci-fi author, with tons of adaptations in the works, plus a continuous multimedia expansion of the Cosmere. The release of the Mistborn movies is still a few years away, according to the author, but they are being produced, bringing the story of Vin and Kelsier to life. Sanderson’s Stormlight Archive is also getting a TV show on Apple TV, but before that happens, fans can enjoy the series in another way.

A major return for The Stormlight Archive is planned to occur in November 2027, and it’s a huge hit with fans, even before the content itself has been released. Brandon Sanderson’s series is making a comeback in the form of a new board game called Stormlight: War for Roshar. Available as a project on Kickstarter, the board game has already met its original funding goal of $ 100,000 and surpassed it by well over 2000%, reaching over $ 2,275,305 at the time of writing.

The funding period for Stormlight: War for Roshar still has two weeks left, meaning that if you’re interested, you may still make a pledge. So what is this game and how does it work? War for Roshar is described as a strategic board game based on Sanderson’s well-known fantasy series. If you’re a fan of large-scale war games like Star Wars: Rebellion and War of the Ring, you may find something similar in this upcoming Stormlight project. War for Roshar covers the conflict between the Coalition of Honor and Odium.

Stormlight: War for Roshar kicks off a new era for the franchise, as it allows fans to actively participate in one of the most devastating conflicts in the series. Created by John D. Clair for two to four players, War for Roshar’s asymmetric game design lets you take control of some of the most popular characters in The Stormlight Archive, including Dalinar, Raboniel, Taravangian, and, of course, Kaladin. The goal is to increase your leader’s power and make choices that lead you to claim Oathgates on the battlefield.

Stormlight War for Roshar

The standard version of War for Roshar on Kickstarter comes in a box with a game board, the essential leader miniatures, character boards, tons of cards, tokens, and trackers that make for a complex and riveting match. Through different tier pledges, you can also grab different types of expansions, including the Champions Expansion for the return to The Stormlight Archive. There are also other miniature bundles, including those from the larger Cosmere universe. A sample of the rulebook is available for free on the Kickstarter page.

Having surpassed its initial funding goal, Stormlight: War for Roshar is a near-guaranteed project. According to its page on Kickstarter, the goal is to have the board game delivered by November 2027 – though delays with projects such as these are completely normal. Even so, it’s very likely that we’ll be able to dive into The Stormlight Archive’s universe with this game before we get the TV show that adapts Brandon Sanderson’s fantasy novels.
