A new push for a shark barrier at Sorrento Beach is set to be put to the City of Joondalup council following Friday’s fatal attack on swimmer, Greg O’Neill.

Mayor Daniel Kingston said he understood why many in the community were asking what more could be done to protect beach users, after many witnessed the shark attack, which occurred just 15 metres offshore.

“The recent tragedy at Sorrento Beach has deeply affected our community, and our thoughts remain with the family and loved ones of the person who lost their life,” he said.

“I understand why many people are asking what more can be done to improve shark mitigation and safety at our beaches. Our community to have those questions taken seriously.

Making headlines today, Western Australia’s peak body for doctors has called on the government to reverse the “ruthless” decision to cut beds from the state’s only inpatient mental health unit for children under 16, warning the system is already operating “beyond capacity”.

It comes after this masthead revealed Perth Children’s Hospital ward 5A, the state’s inpatient mental health facility for children and teenagers under 16, would reopen with 16 beds instead of 20, once its refurbishment was complete.
