N1 reopens after horror crash claims 21 lives

The N1 between Prince Albert Road and Leeu-Gamka in the Central Karoo has been reopened to traffic following a devastating crash that claimed the lives of 21 people.

The collision, involving two minibus taxis and a station wagon, occurred late on Sunday night and left another four people seriously injured.

The crash scene has since been cleared and the wreckage removed, allowing traffic to resume along the highway.

Vehicle veered into oncoming traffic

Preliminary findings by traffic officials indicate that one of the vehicles travelling towards Cape Town veered into the path of oncoming traffic.

The vehicle then collided with the other two vehicles, resulting in the deadly multi-vehicle crash.

Minister visits crash scene

Western Cape Mobility Minister Isaac Sileku visited the scene earlier and conveyed his condolences to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives.

Sileku said the focus would now shift towards supporting the survivors and the families of those who died.

The scale of the tragedy has once again highlighted the dangers faced by motorists and passengers using the province’s major roads.

With the N1 now reopened, authorities are urging motorists travelling through the Central Karoo to exercise caution and remain vigilant.
