Neon to Produce Fictional SCP Foundation Anthology Feature
Neon, having seen Backrooms and Obsession break out at the multiplex, is doubling down on horror by unveiling plans to produce an anthology feature based on the SCP Foundation fan-created horror and sci-fi mythologies.
Neon plans a 2027 theatrical release under the Creative Commons license for the open-source horror film based on a fictional secretive organization that keeps supernatural items and other harmful entities away from the public. The studio will be in a race of sorts as A24 also plans its own SCP Foundation movie set for a 2027 release and to be produced in partnership with Spooky Pictures and Image Nation Studios.
For its movie, Neon plans to focus on emerging filmmakers to contribute to the anthology feature based on the sprawling SCP Wiki launched in 2008 as a collaborative and speculative fiction website. The studio indicated it has consulted the SCP Wiki team to ensure a planned theatrical release complements the fan-built site’s mission and licensing guidelines.
“Over its nearly two decades of existence and with thousands of contributors, the site has built an engaged, global fanbase and has inspired short films, web series and games,” Neon said in a statement. The planned anthology feature will look to build on Neon’s track record in the genre movie space, which includes Osgood Perkins’ Longlegs, starring Maika Monroe and Nicolas Cage, and The Monkey.
More recently, Neon released Alex Ullom’s SXSW breakout It Ends and will be producing his next film 4 x 4: the Event. Other Neon productions include Osgood Perkins’ The Young People, David Robert Mitchell’s They Follow, Matt Johnson’s The Vice Guide and Arie and Chuko Esiri’s Clarissa.
Of course, Neon has also had an impressive run with Oscar-nominated and winning pics like Sean Baker’s Anora and Bong Joon Ho’s Parasite.
