Afenyo-Markin urges Mahama to free TikToker Camila, warns against fear as a political tool

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has urged President John Dramani Mahama to pardon Camila Alhassan, who is serving a prison sentence over her social media activity.

The Effutu MP requested the 30th Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Media Awards in Accra, using the occasion to caution against using criminal punishment in ways that could discourage citizens from freely expressing their views.

Mr Afenyo-Markin argued that a democratic society must not create an environment where people fear speaking out or sharing opinions, warning that fear should never become a tool for controlling public discourse.

“I appeal to President Mahama to pardon Camila Alhassan, who is in jail because of her social media activity. We must not allow fear and panic to become the new language of political control,” he said.

Camila Alhassan was sentenced to one year’s imprisonment with hard labour by an Accra Circuit Court in July 2026 after pleading guilty to offensive conduct conducive to a breach of the peace over a TikTok video containing derogatory remarks about President Mahama and his family.
