Jennifer Lawrence has quoted The Hunger Games as she urged fans to vote in the US midterm elections.

The 36-year-old actress starred in the dystopian film franchise as Katniss Everdeen, who takes on a role as a rebel leader in the fight to take down an oppressive regime.

The actress encouraged her 8.7 million followers on Instagram to hit the polls on Tuesday and help decide which party – the Democrats or the Republicans – will control Congress for the rest of President Donald Trump’s term.

Lawrence shared a photograph of herself making a three-finger salute – a sign of resistance in the series which has since been adopted by protesters and pro-democracy movements.

She quoted a line from the third film Mockingjay: Part I which characterised the turning point for her character in fully embracing her role as the face of the rebellion.

The actress said: “Midterms BB. Don’t forget who burns with us.”

Despite not endorsing any candidate or party, Lawrence has previously been vocal about voting for the Democratic Party in recent years after being raised in a Republican household.

It comes days after the actress confirmed she appears in the upcoming prequel in the franchise, The Hunger Games: Sunrise On The Reaping.

Singer Bruce Springsteen, actor Samuel L Jackson and pop star Olivia Rodrigo were also among the stars who cast their ballots for the US midterm elections.

Springsteen shared a video wishing “all a good election day” and urged election officials and government representatives to “ensure” that votes are securely counted.

“Our vote is our voice,” he said.

“It is up to you to ensure that our voice is heard.”

The singer wrote in his caption: “If you haven’t voted already, thank you for voting today!”

Meanwhile Rodrigo shared a video from her Daisy Chain Fields festival account which was captioned quoting a lyric from her song Serena Joy: “The life of your dreams is beyond that cliff.”

The charity single was released in support of the festival which raised money for a number of women’s rights organisations.

It is believed to be named after one of the antagonists in Margaret Atwood’s dystopian novel The Handmaid’s Tale, who helped to prop up an oppressive world order that ultimately has come back to trap her in it.

The caption continued: “Your voice matters. Get out and vote.”

Stranger Things star Joe Keery shared a photograph wearing an “I voted” sticker.

He said: “Get out and vote!”

Scandal actress Kerry Washington also shared a photograph proudly holding her “I voted” sticker along with a number of resources and posts encouraging others to do the same.

The photograph was soundtracked with Beyonce and Kendrick Lamar’s song Freedom.

Others who joined in included The Odyssey actress Lupita Nyong’o, singer Gracie Abrams and The White Lotus star Carrie Coon, who also urged their fans to vote and proudly shared photographs with “I voted” stickers and T-shirts.
