Kakamega Teacher Praises Government Reforms In Education And Teacher Welfare (Video)

Translate

Raphael Welimo, a teacher from Matungu Sub-County in Kakamega County, has reflected on the contrast between previous government regimes and current education policies, noting significant improvements in teacher welfare and school infrastructure.

Welimo recalled that under past administrations, teachers often felt neglected, facing low pay, delayed allowances for travel, housing, and medical support, and skepticism from financial institutions when applying for loans. During that period, parents bore a heavy financial burden through Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) contributions to construct classrooms and maintain learning environments.

Infrastructure Investment and Teacher Recruitment

Welimo noted that the government’s recent financial allocation toward the education sector has transformed both school infrastructure and staff development across the country:

Recruitment of Intern Teachers

The employment of young graduates as intern teachers has restored confidence among job seekers, offering clear career progression within the education sector.

Teacher Training Reforms

The reorganization and restructuring of teacher training colleges into modern categories have strengthened institutional capacity and teacher preparation.

Housing Priority and Access to Higher Education

Speaking from the perspective of both an educator and a parent, Welimo highlighted key social and economic policies benefiting families and teaching professionals.

Affordable Housing

Teachers have been granted priority access to government-backed affordable housing schemes, easing the path toward homeownership.

Support for Higher Education

Financial guarantees and funding frameworks ensure that qualified university students are not turned away due to an inability to pay tuition fees.

Welimo commended President William Ruto for setting a high standard in educational management, stating that the current administration’s initiatives establish a benchmark for future leadership in the country’s public sector.
