Dizon: P100-M Davao flood control project now 80 percent complete

DAVAO CITY – Public Works Secretary Vince Dizon inspected Monday morning the nearly completed P100 million flood control project in San Juan Village, Barangay Bangkal here.

He told reporters the flood mitigation project is 80 percent complete after two months of work.

Last July 24, the Talomo River overflowed due to heavy rains, causing severe flash floods that affected thousands of families in low-lying areas.

Dizon said the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) projected that the three-meter-high, 109-meter-long gabion wall will be finished in December.

Once completed, he said the DPWH will elevate the Bailey Bridge, which is almost at the same level now as the new gabion wall.

Dizon spoke with Marlon Balabis, 47, a resident heavily affected by the July 24 flash floods. 

He said the Balabis residence was submerged in floodwater and mud.

“Nakakaawa. Malaki ang pagkukulang dito sa flood mitigation natin dito sa Talomo (It’s pitiful; there was a major shortcoming in flood mitigation here in Talomo,” Dizon recalled.
