UK weather forecast: What can we expect in September?

Changeable conditions with occasional rain and gusty winds arriving from the North Atlantic are set to dominate September, with temperatures settling close to seasonal averages.

An autumnal mix of unsettled weather and dry, brighter spells will feature across the UK throughout the month, alongside occasional warmer days in the south, according to Met Office forecasts.

Following a mild start to the week, temperatures are forecast to cool down to peaks of 21C on Tuesday in London and 17C in Glasgow.

By mid to late September, frontal systems from the Atlantic are set to keep conditions varied, particularly across northern and western regions.

Met Office Deputy Chief Forecaster Tony Wisson, said: "September is expected to continue to bring a fairly mixed picture across the UK, with a continuation of the changeable weather pattern we've seen recently.

“Overall, temperatures are likely to be around average or slightly above average for the time of year.

“The strongest signal is for the current changeable pattern to continue, with areas of low pressure bringing further spells of rain, particularly in the north and west, while the south and east are more likely to see drier weather at times."

While temperatures over the weekend stayed relatively warm across the country, Monday is set to be even warmer, with highs of 25C expected in London and 22C in Manchester and Cardiff. It will also likely reach 21C in parts of Scotland.

Although these temperatures are slightly warmer than average, they bring a welcome respite from the heat.

The forecast for the remainder of September comes after the Met Office confirmed the UK had experienced its hottest summer since records began nearly 150 years ago.

Five back-to-back heatwaves between May and August have since left the majority of the country in drought, sparking record numbers of wildfires and severe disruputions to travel.

The UK recorded a mean average temperature across June, July and August of 16.5C, beating the previous seasonal high of 16.1C set last year, the Met Office said.

The highest temperature recorded this summer was on 13 August at Kew Gardens, when the mercury hit 38.1C.
