Mass Effect 3's multiplayer was a huge part of its identity, so when it didn't show up in Mass Effect: Legendary Edition, players were justifiably confused. BioWare explained that adding multiplayer to the Legendary Edition at the time would have been too difficult and would have taken away resources from other, more important features and functionalities that the studio wanted to enhance. Unfortunately, this meant that, for the longest time, Mass Effect: Legendary Edition has been missing a fundamental part of one of its best entries.

Fortunately, that has finally changed, as Mass Effect: Legendary Edition finally has multiplayer again. The introduction of multiplayer ostensibly closes the book on the remaster's biggest flaw and gives fans what they have been requesting for so long. It also joins a wealth of new content coming to Mass Effect: Legendary Edition and introduces an exciting new way for those who've just discovered the series to experience Mass Effect's vast world and intricate systems, something that will undoubtedly prove to be an exciting prospect to many.

Back in 2021, Mass Effect: Legendary Edition project director Mac Walters spoke with GameInformer about the trials and tribulations of adding multiplayer to the remastered collection. He explained that "it was just really hard" and that "getting all of the online systems working and functionality would have been another large chunk to do." However, the biggest problem arose from the idea that there were too many variables the team couldn't seem to contend with, including the idea of needing to support it post-launch, adding crossplay, and ensuring it remained playable in the long term.

Naturally, these qualms and quibbles could not deter dedicated fans with a dogmatic attitude toward reimplementing multiplayer functionality in their favorite game. These types of concerns are not of particular importance to a ragtag team of modders determined to just play a few rounds with their friends and see Mass Effect restored to its former glory. Thus, we now have the incredibly impressive Mass Effect: Legendary Edition Multiplayer Mod, which aims to completely restore the original ME3 multiplayer mode in its entirety.

The mod, developed by PayDay, is the complete ME3 multiplayer experience, untarnished, uncompromised, and unadulterated. It has all 19 maps at launch, all 66 playable characters, and the four enemy factions. The Mass Effect: Legendary Edition Multiplayer mod brings back the store, every unlock, the various promotional items, legacy reward packs, weapon mods, voice chat functionality, challenges, event banners, leaderboards, and even the seasonal events, each of which will occur during their original dates. It's wildly ambitious and frankly unbelievable, and yet, there it is, in all its glory.

This may just be one of the best Mass Effect: Legendary Edition mods available, a truly triumphant achievement that brought the impossible to life. Fans who missed out the first time around will absolutely want to check this out, as Mass Effect 3's multiplayer mode was genuinely excellent and a fun addition to an already phenomenal experience. Indeed, it makes one long for the days of Xbox 360 multiplayer, a far simpler era, the likes of which Mass Effect should likely return to, especially during this age of uncertainty.
