South Africa’s most unusual tourist attractions

Translate

South Africa has plenty of famous attractions, but some of the most memorable places to visit are the ones you probably won’t find on a typical tourist itinerary.

From a surreal house filled with strange sculptures to a reptile centre in the Drakensberg, these five attractions offer something a little different.

1. The Owl House – Nieu-Bethesda, Eastern Cape

Hidden in the tiny Karoo village of Nieu-Bethesda, the Owl House is one of South Africa’s most unusual attractions.

Artist Helen Martins transformed her home into a surreal world filled with cement sculptures, crushed glass, mirrors, owls, camels and mythical figures. The bizarre collection eventually became known as outsider art and inspired Athol Fugard’s play The Road to Mecca.

Visitors can explore the house and its equally unusual Camel Yard.

Why visit: It’s one of those places that feels more like stepping into an artist’s imagination than visiting a museum.

2. Vredefort Dome – Free State and North West

South Africa is home to something truly extraordinary: the remains of the largest confirmed meteorite impact structure on Earth.

The Vredefort Dome was created when an enormous asteroid struck the area around two billion years ago. Today, the landscape is marked by unusual geological formations, hills and valleys created by the ancient impact.

The area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and offers activities including hiking, mountain biking, river activities and exploring the surrounding countryside.

Why visit: You’re standing inside the remains of an impact crater created by an asteroid billions of years ago.

3. Erasmus Castle – Pretoria, Gauteng

A medieval-looking castle in suburban Pretoria would already be unusual, but Erasmus Castle has another claim to fame: it is known as Die Spookhuis, or the Haunted House.

The Victorian-era building dates back to the late 1800s and has become associated with decades of ghost stories and reports of strange occurrences.

The castle has hosted paranormal investigations and tours, making it an intriguing tourist attraction for anyone interested in South Africa’s more mysterious history.

Why visit: It combines an unusual piece of architecture with a reputation for being one of Pretoria’s most haunted buildings.

4. Dragon Rock Reptile Centre – Drakensberg, KwaZulu-Natal

For something genuinely different in the Drakensberg, head to Dragon Rock Reptile Centre in Champagne Valley.

The centre is home to a collection of reptiles and other creatures, including snakes, lizards, spiders and alligators. Guided tours allow visitors to learn about the animals and, where appropriate, get closer to some of them.

It is particularly popular with families and makes an unusual addition to a Drakensberg trip when you’re taking a break from hiking and mountain scenery.

Why visit: Where else can you spend the morning surrounded by some of South Africa’s most misunderstood creatures, with the Drakensberg as your backdrop?

5. Mapungubwe’s Interpretation Centre – Limpopo

The Mapungubwe Interpretation Centre is one of South Africa’s most distinctive pieces of architecture. Located at Mapungubwe National Park, the building was designed to blend into its surroundings while reflecting the area’s ancient history.

Its striking vaulted structures are made using local materials and traditional construction techniques, creating a building that looks almost like part of the landscape.

The centre tells the story of Mapungubwe, an ancient African kingdom that flourished more than 700 years ago. The archaeological site is particularly famous for discoveries including the Golden Rhinoceros, which provided important evidence of the kingdom’s wealth and trading connections.

Why visit: It combines remarkable architecture, ancient African history and a spectacular Limpopo landscape in one unusual attraction.
