The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued warnings for severe weather conditions affecting parts of the country.

Impact-based warnings:

Yellow Level 2: Severe thunderstorms are expected over the south-eastern parts of KwaZulu-Natal, which may result in heavy downpours, damaging winds, hail and excessive lightning.

These may lead to localised flooding of susceptible roads, low-lying areas and bridges, and localised damage to settlement and infrastructure.

Yellow Level 2: Damaging winds are expected along the coast and adjacent interior between Port Edward and Richards Bay, resulting in localised damage to settlements, disruption to beachfront activities, and difficulty in navigation.

Yellow Level 1: Damaging waves are expected between Cape Columbine and Cape Agulhas, leading to difficulty in navigation at sea and putting small vessels at risk of capsizing.

Conditions are expected to spread to Alexander Bay in the north and Plettenberg Bay in the east by the evening, and to persist into Thursday.

In the SAWS’ colour-coded weather warning system, yellow indicates a moderate risk of impact that requires caution and awareness, while orange indicates that a higher-risk impact is expected, requiring increased attention and preparation.

SAWS uses the numbers to indicate the likelihood of weather-based impacts occurring. Levels 2 and 6 are high, Level 5 is medium, and Levels 4 and 8 are low.
