Sujeet Kalkal pulled off a stunning comeback win against Tajikistan’s Abdulmajid Kudiyev in the men’s freestyle 65kg final on Friday at the Nagoya City Inae Sports Center.
After trailing 2-9 in the first round, Sujeet won eight points in the second without conceding another to claim the gold medal.
The Indian grappler has now added the Asian Games gold to his burgeoning cabinet that also hold the Asian Championship crown and also the World Under-23 title.
The final though didn’t begin well for Sujeet as Kudiyev charged into a commanding lead. The Kazakh fighter was watertight with his defence, forcing his opponent to overstretch before pouncing on the counterattack.
But Sujeet regrouped after the break as he pounded Kudiyev with relentless lower-body attacks. He forced three takedowns to reduce the deficit to just one point at 8-9.
With 10 seconds to go, Sujeet unlocked Kudiyev’s defence once again to get in another takedown for two more points to seal the gold medal.
