Malaysian swimmer Tong Yu Jin ruled out of Asian Games after appendix surgery

NAGOYA, Sept 22 — National men’s swimmer Tong Yu Jin successfully underwent surgery on Monday after being diagnosed with appendicitis and has since been transferred to a ward for monitoring and further treatment.

The National Sports Council (NSC) secretariat, which was informed of the athlete’s condition early Monday morning, acted swiftly to ensure Yu Jin, who was scheduled to compete in two events — the 50m freestyle and 50m butterfly — received immediate medical attention.

“Yu Jin began experiencing abdominal pain and vomiting on September 21 before being taken to Juntendo University Urayasu Hospital for examination and treatment.

“The NSC secretariat subsequently informed the honorary vice-secretary of the Malaysia Swimming Association, Nurul Huda Abdullah, and National Sports Institute (ISN) medical officer Dr Ahamd Munawar Helmi Salim of the athlete’s condition and treatment status,” NSC said in a statement today.

Medical examinations found that Yu Jin had appendicitis and required immediate surgery.

The recommendation was also supported by ISN medical personnel to reduce the risk of complications and ensure that the athlete received appropriate treatment.

As a result, Yu Jin was forced to withdraw from the 50m freestyle event held on September 21 and the 50m butterfly event scheduled for September 24.

The NSC secretariat will continue to obtain updates on the athlete’s condition and ensure that any important developments concerning his health status, treatment and athlete management requirements are communicated to the relevant parties. — Bernama
