Rider nabbed for fleeing police checkpoint found with loose firearm

MANILA, Philippines — A motorcycle rider was arrested for allegedly fleeing a police checkpoint and later found carrying an unlicensed firearm and live ammunition in Las Piñas City, according to the Southern Police District (SPD). 

The SPD identified the suspect as alias “Romel,” a 31-year-old male residing in Barangay CAA, Las Piñas City.

Police officers conducting the “Oplan Sita” operation at 8:45 p.m. on Monday attempted to flag down two individuals on board the motorcycle along J. Tionquiao Avenue, corner Samuel St. in Barangay Manuyo Dos.

The SPD said in a statement on Tuesday that the rider allegedly refused to stop and immediately fled, causing the back rider to fall to the ground and dislodge a .38-caliber revolver when he landed. 

Recovered from the rider were a .38-caliber revolver without a serial number and two live .38-caliber rounds.

The suspect allegedly failed to present the necessary firearm documents, leading to his arrest.

After police brought him to the Las Piñas District Hospital for medical examination, the suspect was turned over to the Station Investigation and Detective Management Section (SIDMS), along with the recovered firearm and ammunition, for proper disposition.

The suspect is facing complaints for violation of the Motorcycle Crime Prevention Act and the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act. (Martina Nieyandra Calica/INQUIRER.net trainee) /mr
