EastEnders and Strictly Come Dancing star showcases singing talent in first look at new role

Maisie Smith has already showcased her acting and dancing skills while appearing on EastEnders and Strictly Come Dancing. But now the star has proven she's a triple threat with a stunning song performance ahead of her new theatre role.

Smith is set to appear as Audrey in the upcoming production of Little Shop of Horrors, which will open at Manchester's Hope Mill Theatre on 25 September. In a newly released video, fans were given a first look at the actor singing 'Somewhere That's Green' from the show.

Based on the movie and off-Broadway musical, the story follows flower shop assistant Seymour, who discovers a strange, sentient plant that can grant him success in exchange for human blood.

Seymour is in love with his colleague Audrey and uses the plant's (Audrey II) powers to attempt to gain her interest.

Despite being in a relationship with Orin, Audrey is extremely unhappy and longs to be with Seymour instead. The video sees Smith in her new role opposite the plant puppet, as Audrey sings about a blissful married life in the suburbs with Seymour.

As per WhatsOnStage, the production is directed and choregraphed by Tony and Olivier Award nominee Carrie-Anne Ingrouille, with music by Alan Menken and book and lyrics by Howard Ashman.

Featuring alongside Smith are Michael Starke as Mr Mushnik, Jed Berry as Seymour, Marcus Ayton as the voice of Audrey II and Benjamin Yates as Orin Scrivello, the Dentist.

The cast also includes Kai Cameron-Jay, Ella Howlett, Rio Maye, Psalms-Nissi Myers-Reid, Joseph Peacock, Nathen Scott and Gabrielle Davina Smith.

Four puppets were specially commissioned to embody Audrey II, created by Robert Allsopp, whose has also worked on Doctor Who, X-Men, The Witcher and Wicked: For Good. The puppeteers are Julia Frost, Christopher Dobson and Imogen Khan.

Little Shop of Horrors opens at Hope Mill Theatre in Manchester on Friday 25 September.

EastEnders airs on Mondays-Thursdays at 7.30pm on BBC One. The show also streams on BBC iPlayer, where most episodes drop early at 6am ahead of their TV broadcast.
