Michael DiPietro’s Stunning Start Could Change Everything For The Boston Bruins

Nobody expected Michael DiPietro to be part of this conversation. The Boston Bruins signed him as a backup to Jeremy Swayman, a low-risk depth piece who had spent three full seasons grinding through the AHL with Providence. His NHL resume coming in? Three appearances with Vancouver, a .771 save percentage, and zero quality starts. But through five games this season, DiPietro is 4-1-0 with a .924 save percentage, a 2.20 GAA, a shutout, and a perfect 1.000 quality starts percentage.

DiPietro's Numbers Are Not a Fluke

The raw numbers are only part of the story. Per Hockey Reference, DiPietro has allowed 11 goals total, eight at even strength, which sits 3.7 above expected. That is not a goalie who is squeaking by. That is a goalie outperforming the math behind the shots he's facing.

Before this season, DiPietro had never posted a GAA above 2.51 in three consecutive AHL campaigns, so the foundation was there. But AHL competence doesn't always translate cleanly to the NHL, and plenty of late-developing goaltenders have made the jump only to get exposed fast. DiPietro hasn't looked like that. He's looked settled. Comfortable. Like someone who belongs.

His emergence matters most for Swayman. Last season Swayman carried 58 starts, then 55 the year after. With DiPietro playing this well, there's no reason to run Swayman into the ground again. Currently, Swayman is pacing for 59 starts, leaving DiPietro with roughly 25. If DiPietro keeps this up, that number could push closer to 30, and Swayman arrives fresher for the stretch run and playoffs. That is a real competitive advantage, not just a roster depth note.

How This Tandem Is Reshaping Boston's Season

Boston as a team has actually allowed more high-danger chances than it has created this season. That is a problem on paper. But Swayman and DiPietro have been denying enough of those looks that the offence has room to breathe. The Bruins currently rank fifth in the league in goal scoring, and the goaltending duo deserves credit for creating that environment.

Swayman himself is 7.1 goals above expected at even strength this season, with a .913 save percentage across 12 starts. So both goalies are producing. That does not happen by accident, and it rarely happens when a backup is barely holding the fort.

This tandem has quietly become one of the better one-two punches in the Eastern Conference. Boston went into 2026-27 hoping DiPietro could be serviceable. What they got is a goalie making a genuine case to stay.
