Green Lantern history extends far beyond the exploits of Hal Jordan, John Stewart, and the other human members of the Corps. Across countless alien worlds, courageous individuals have been chosen to wield the formidable power rings and serve as intergalactic protectors, with several becoming enduring figures in DC’s cosmic mythology.

Their origins, personalities, and abilities can vary considerably, but each has played an important role in defending their assigned sectors. Some have become trusted veterans of the Corps, while others are remembered for their unique powers, memorable designs, or major contributions to the franchise. This piece highlights the most famous of them to ever appear in DC Comics.

10 Soranik Natu

Soranik Natu is a gifted neurosurgeon from Korugar who became the Green Lantern of Sector 1417. Her path was unusual because Korugarians had developed a deep hatred for the Corps after Sinestro used his ring to rule their world. As a result, Soranik initially wanted nothing to do with the organization or its rings.

Despite her early objections, Soranik slowly discovered that being a Green Lantern offered her an opportunity to protect people on a much larger scale. She proved to be a dependable member of the Corps and repeatedly proved herself. Her abilities as a doctor also remained central to her character, creating a unique and valuable combination of combat skills and medical knowledge.

9 Salaak

Salaak is a Slyggian Green Lantern who has protected Sector 1418 for much of his long service with the Corps. He is characterized by a pessimistic outlook and strict devotion to protocol, often appearing more concerned with following established rules than embracing the improvisational methods of fellow Lanterns. Even so, his experience has made him a dependable member.

His responsibilities eventually expanded beyond routine fieldwork when he became the Guardians’ protocol officer and Keeper of the Book of Oa. The latter position gave him an important role in preserving the Corps’ history, while his knowledge of its laws made him a valuable administrator. During the Blackest Night, Salaak even assumed command as Clarissi.

8 Sodam Yat

Sodam Yat is a Daxamite Green Lantern who was destined to become one of the Corps’ most powerful members. His people share several traits with Kryptonians, including tremendous strength, speed, flight, and enhanced senses under a yellow sun. When equipped with a power ring, Yat possesses an extraordinary combination of natural abilities and Lantern powers.

His significance grew during the Sinestro Corps War, when the Guardians selected him as the new host of Ion, the living embodiment of the Corps’ willpower. Yat later battled Superboy-Prime and survived a devastating encounter with lead poisoning. He ultimately returned to Daxam, where he used Ion’s power to turn its red sun yellow and protect his people.

7 Katma Tui

Katma Tui also hailed from Korugar and endured the tyrannical rule of Sinestro. Rather than simply accept his subjugation, she joined the resistance against him and later testified before the Guardians after his capture. Her bravery eventually earned her a power ring, allowing her to join the organization she had once distrusted.

Her career with the Corps led her to meet John Stewart, whom she was assigned to train after his recruitment. Their professional relationship gradually became romantic, before leading to marriage. Katma continued serving as a Green Lantern alongside Stewart, but their life together ended when Carol Ferris killed her while acting as Star Sapphire’s.

6 Arisia Rrab

Arisia Rrab is a Graxonite from Graxos IV, where the Green Lantern mantle had already been passed through several generations of her family. She was selected to serve after the deaths of her father, Fentara, and uncle, Blish, taking on the responsibilities of Sector 2815 while still remarkably young. This made her one of the Corps’ youngest recruits.

Her early career quickly placed her alongside experienced Lanterns during major conflicts, including the battle against Krona and Nekron. She later relocated to Earth after the Crisis on Infinite Earths and joined the planet’s unusual gathering of Green Lanterns. During her time there, she came into close contact with Hal Jordan and several other notable members of the Corps.

5 Ch’p

Ch’p is an H’lvenite Green Lantern from the world of H’lven, where he once led a resistance against the invading forces of Doctor Ub’x. Captured and sentenced to death, he was secretly chosen by a Guardian and given a power ring. He used its abilities to defeat Ub’x and became the protector of Sector 1014.

Following his recruitment, Ch’p trained alongside other prominent Lanterns and even formed a tight bond with Hal Jordan. His career remained eventful, but ended tragically after the Crisis on Infinite Earths. While serving with the surviving Lanterns, Ch’p was struck and killed by a yellow truck, later being memorialized on Oa.

4 Mogo

Mogo is a sentient planet and one of the most unusual members of the Green Lantern Corps. The enormous world serves as the protector of Sector 2261, with its entire planetary body effectively functioning as its physical form. Its immense gravitational field also makes visiting Oa impractical, as assembling alongside the other Lanterns could potentially tear the headquarters planet apart.

Mogo notably performs a vital function for the Corps beyond protecting its assigned sector. It has the invaluable role of guiding power rings toward potential new bearers, helping replenish the organization after Lanterns die. The living planet can also reshape its environment, allowing alien populations to inhabit its surface while maintaining conditions suitable for their survival.

3 Abin Sur

Abin Sur was the Green Lantern of Sector 2814 long before Hal Jordan ever received a power ring. A native of Ungara, he originally worked as a history professor before beginning his long tenure with the Corps. During that time, he became friends with Tomar-Re and mentored Sinestro, whom he initially considered one of its greatest members.

His final mission became a major catalyst for Hal Jordan’s origin story, which was also tied to the Blackest Night prophecy. While transporting Atrocitus to Earth, the prisoner broke free and attacked him, leaving the Lantern mortally wounded. Abin’s damaged vessel subsequently crashed, but he still managed to ensure that his power ring found his iconic successor.

2 Tomar-Re

Tomar-Re was a Xudarian Green Lantern who protected Sector 2813 and was among the first alien members Hal Jordan encountered after the human received his ring. He introduced Hal to the wider Corps and helped demonstrate just how diverse its membership could be. He also became a close friend of Abin Sur and served within the elite Honor Guard.

Tomar-Re is particularly remembered for his connection to Krypton, which fell within his assigned sector. He was sent to save the unstable planet by delivering Stellarium that could stabilize its core, but a solar flare incapacitated him before he could complete the mission. The failure haunted him for years, marking a great tragedy in an otherwise distinguished career.

1 Kilowog

Kilowog hails from Bolovax Vik, a densely populated world whose people shared a communal mental connection. His recruitment into the Green Lantern Corps meant leaving that society behind to serve in space, but he embraced the responsibility. He eventually became an accomplished Lantern and took over as the Corps’ drill sergeant after Ermey died.

His trainees are famously referred to as “poozers,” a nickname that reflects his often abrasive teaching style. Kilowog nonetheless has a softer side beneath the gruff exterior, forming close friendships with Lanterns such as Hal Jordan, John Stewart, and Arisia Rrab.
