Milei: It’s important Trump ‘emerges stronger’ from US midterms

In another departure from diplomatic conventions, President Javier Milei said Wednesday that he hoped Donald Trump would emerge stronger from the upcoming midterm elections in the United States.

Speaking in Washington, Milei reiterated his support for the US president and his ambition to consolidate American influence across the hemisphere.

The President made the remarks during a speech in Washington at the Official Hispanic Heritage Gala, organised by the Latino Wall Street platform and hard-right news outlet La Derecha Diario, where he received an award recognising his leadership and global impact.

"It is important, not only for the United States but for the entire West...that President Trump emerge stronger from November's elections; we cannot give an inch in our reconquest of the hemisphere," said Milei.

"Winning is just the first step. Now we have a mandate to make the Americas great again," he added.

"Separated, we are weak, but together we are strong," Milei said.

The President arrived in the US capital Wednesday to meet with investors and attend the gala. He is scheduled to deliver another speech Thursday at the US Chamber of Commerce.

Milei is one of Trump's closest allies in Latin America. The Republican leader firmly backed the La Libertad Avanza leader a year ago, when Milei faced its own crucial midterm elections.

Trump's support, coupled with an unprecedented US$20-billion currency swap agreement involving the US Treasury, contributed to Milei's success in the 2025 election.

The outlook is less favourable for Trump ahead of the November 3 midterms. Polls point to a difficult result for Republicans, who risk losing control of Congress, with observers expecting Democrats to make at least one gain in the House of Representatives.

Latin America and the Caribbean have experienced a sharp shift to the right in recent years, a trend that has accelerated since Trump's return to the White House.

Trump has reiterated his ambition for the United States to maintain a dominant position in the region, seeking to impose what he calls the “Donroe Doctrine,” a play on the Monroe Doctrine of 1823, which sought to assert Washington's dominance on the region.

His administration has also established a new security alliance, the Shield of the Americas, alongside regional partners, including Milei’s Argentina.

President Milei has portrayed his administration's foreign policy as part of a broader campaign, saying his government has backed leaders aligned with “the ideas of freedom” across the world.

In recent weeks, both Milei and Trump have extended that support to Brazil, endorsing right-wing presidential candidate Flávio Bolsonaro ahead of his October 25 run-off against President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

On Wednesday, MIlei called on Brazilians to “kick out” Lula, whom he described as a “Communist dictator.”

"I would like to take this opportunity to greet Eduardo, Flávio's brother, who is present here today, and to send a message of affection and support both to Flávio and to his father, my friend [former] President Jair Bolsonaro, who remains unjustly imprisoned," he said.

"Country after country, at the ballot box, through our government, we have unreservedly supported all those who have aligned themselves with the ideas of freedom across the entire region, and the results have been decisive,” said the President.
