SASSA gold card deadline: What you need to know

If you’re one of the SASSA beneficiaries still holding onto your old Gold Card, time has officially run out to make the switch. The 31 August 2026 deadline set by Postbank for migrating from SASSA Gold Cards to the new Postbank Black Cards has arrived, and the bank has confirmed there will be no extension.

WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU MISS IT?

Gold Cards are being phased out completely. Once the deadline passes, these cards will simply stop working, meaning beneficiaries who haven’t switched could find themselves locked out of their own grant payments.

Postbank Chief Commercial Officer Thamsanqa Cele has been sounding the alarm on this since the beginning of the year, warning that the window was closing fast and that anyone left without a Black Card after the cut-off would need to sort out a new one before they could access their money.

WHO’S STILL AFFECTED?

According to the latest figures, close to 70 000 to 80 000 beneficiaries nationwide still hadn’t made the switch in the lead-up to today’s deadline. KwaZulu-Natal reportedly has the highest number of stragglers, with around 20 000 beneficiaries in the province yet to migrate.

If you’re one of them, the good news is you’re not completely out of luck. SASSA has confirmed that beneficiaries who haven’t collected their new cards yet will still be able to do so at designated collection sites even after the deadline.

WHERE TO GO

Replacing your card costs nothing. Beneficiaries can head to their nearest Postbank service point or one of several major retailers stocking the Black Cards, including Shoprite, Checkers, Usave, Pick n Pay, Boxer and Spar.

You’ll need a valid ID (or a valid temporary ID) to make the swap. Postbank has urged beneficiaries not to wait for their September payment date to make the move, warning that queues at replacement sites are only going to get longer as more people rush to beat the deadline.

NO NEED TO VISIT SASSA OFFICES

One thing worth noting: you don’t need to go anywhere near a SASSA office for this. Postbank and SASSA have both confirmed that once you’ve collected your new Black Card, it works instantly, no extra registration required.

Minister of Social Development Dina Pule has reassured beneficiaries that the transition itself won’t affect their actual grant payments, only the card used to access them. Still, if you haven’t made the switch yet, today is the day to act.
