‘Only Murders In The Building’ Moving Writers Room To New York For Likely Season 7

EXCLUSIVE: After Only Murders In the Building‘s sleuthing trio of Charles (Steve Martin), Oliver (Martin Short) and Mabel (Selena Gomez) trekked to London for the upcoming Season 6, the writers room of the Hulu mystery comedy series is on the move too.

Based in Los Angeles for the first six seasons, the room will relocate to New York for Season 7, Deadline has learned. OMITB has not been renewed for a seventh season yet but that is expected given its status as a signature Hulu series that continues to do well, recently garnering five more Emmy nominations.

The writing team for the likely new installment has not been set yet, but some writers are expected to stay on, moving to New York for an in-person room led by co-creator, executive producer and showrunner John Hoffman, sources said.

A rep for 20th Television, which produces Only Murders In the Building, declined comment.

It is standard practice among streamers to commission writers rooms ahead of formal greenlights for subsequent installments as a way to shorten gaps between seasons. In the case of Only Murders In the Building, the goal from the start had been to keep the series on a yearly cadence, something it has been able to maintain so far, with Season 6 slated for Dec. 8 release. (The 15-month gap between Seasons 5 and 6 is the longest so far in the series’ run; the wait had been typically around 12 months.)

Up until now, OMITB would finish writing a season in Los Angeles before Hoffman would go to New York for the filming. With the complex logistics of the Season 6 shoot in London, which only wrapped last week, that would not have been possible for Season 7, which is expected to bring back the action to New York.

In order to get the new season ready for 2027 (or the start of 2028), writing and filming would have to overlap, which led to the decision to move the writers room to New York, allowing Hoffman to juggle writing and production.

Only Murders in the Building was created by Martin and Hoffman. The duo executive produces Season 6 alongside Short, Gomez, Dan Fogelman, Jess Rosenthal, Ben Smith, Jennifer Crittenden & Gabrielle Allan.
