ABC Is Finally Bringing Back 9-1-1: Lone Star In The Best Way Possible

ABC is working to bring back 9-1-1: Lone Star. It comes almost two years after the cancellation of the Austin-based first responder drama, opening up all sorts of questions about how it could be possible and who could appear.
In a way, it shouldn't be that surprising that Rashad Raisani wants to bring his characters back. He was the showrunner on 9-1-1: Lone Star, and he always made it clear that he wasn't quite finished writing their stories. The way the series ended kept the door open for them to return if storylines made sense and schedules could work.
9-1-1: Nashville is Staging A Lone Star Crossover
TVLine reports that 9-1-1: Nashville season 2 will see a mini-crossover with 9-1-1. This will be via a FaceTime approach, making it possible for characters to help out in Nashville without physically being there. It's one of the best decisions the show could make, and Nashville is the perfect show to stage this type of crossover. Not only are the dynamics similar, but the series is bringing in a new character who makes this type of storyline believable.
It's not like the 9-1-1 creators haven't figured out how to do mini-crossover moments in the past. During 9-1-1 Season 9, Maddie got in touch with Cammie in Nashville to help reach Hen and Athena in space during a geostorm. It was a small moment that showed just how the dispatchers can end up being connected, but this latest crossover tease is going to work differently.
As Raisani delved into teases of 9-1-1: Nashville season 2, there was one major reveal that piqued interest. The upcoming special episode will also include some notable faces from the previously-cancelled 9-1-1: Lone Star. Plot specifics are still kept under the wraps for now, but there's confirmation that it is currently in the works, which means that if everything goes according to plan, particularly when it comes to filming schedules for those involved, it will indeed happen, as the showrunner has planned.
Why Lone Star's Best Chance Of Returning Is Through 9-1-1: Nashville
Raisani was the showrunner of the Texas-based 9-1-1 spinoff, and he's now the showrunner on Nashville. He knows exactly which characters would immediately jump in to help, and he also knows how to seamlessly fit the characters from two cities together.
For a crossover to feel warranted and not just a bit of fan service, there needs to be a connection to the story. 9-1-1: Nashville is already creating the perfect way to bring characters back. Ryan Phillippe's new character, Rogue, is a homicide detective from New York City. That's where Owen Strand went at the very end of Lone Star, taking up the job as Fire Chief for the New York Fire Department. He also originally had roots there, along with his son TK, and first responders regularly work closely together.
While Buck and Hen have already met Lone Star characters, the vibe of the show wouldn't fit as well for a crossover event. The city of Nashville holds many similar values to Austin, including the focus on faith and local pride. With the father-son focus on both the 126 and 113, it creates similar vibes for those who may not have watched Lone Star and could end up going back to check out Raisani's previous series.
Which Lone Star Characters Are The Best To Appear In The 9-1-1 Crossover
The easiest character to appear in a possible FaceTime call is Owen Strand with the New York connection, which would justify the cop-out ending. If Rogue knows the Strand family from their previous life in New York, this could lead to Rogue needing help from TK. While TK became a stay-at-home dad, he would still retain his medical and firefighting knowledge to help, and this continues to open the door for Carlos to appear.
If 9-1-1: Nashville wanted to take the focus off fire and put it on medical, Owen could be the perfect person to introduce Roxie to Tommy or Nancy. This is less likely, as Nashville has been so heavily focused on fire and disaster emergencies rather than medical ones, but the show needs to branch out and shine more like on Roxie and Taylor's jobs within the 126.
Owen makes the most sense on a story arc level, as well. Not only is there the New York connection, but Owen could also offer some words of advice to Don Hart. Owen knows what it's like to have a son in the same firehouse and worry about his safety. While their personal situations are vastly different, much of the parenting advice about allowing their children to do their own thing and make their own mistakes stands, allowing for a respectful bond to form between the two men. This quickly keeps the door open for more minor crossover moments like this.
This negates keeping the call strictly professional, but this type of relationship could form during an initial FaceTime call. 9-1-1: Nashville could then keep the advice to the end of the hour, as a way to wrap up with hope that a crossover event with 9-1-1: Lone Star could happen again.
9-1-1: Nashville season 2 will premiere on October 15, 2026, 9/8c on ABC.
