The reception of Paramount's Star Trek: Picard was divisive, to say the least. The show's first two seasons received particularly low audience ratings, with criticism ranging from poor writing to a noticeable lack of the 'classic Star Trek' feel. However, there were things fans loved, including legendary actor Patrick Stewart reuniting with several of his Star Trek: The Next Generation co-stars. The third and final season also managed to reignite Trekkie enthusiasm by bringing back some of the franchise's most beloved elements. Now, three years after the series concluded, the long-awaited sequel to Star Trek: Picard has finally arrived.

September 23, 2026, marked the launch of IDW Publishing’s new Star Trek series, the official, canon-compliant sequel to Paramount+'s Star Trek: Picard. Taking place years after the events of Picard Season 3, the series sees Seven of Nine return, now serving as captain of the U.S.S. Enterprise-G. Other notable returning characters include Jack Crusher and Geordi La Forge's daughter, Sidney La Forge.

Brought to life by a creative team featuring fan-favorite writer Christopher Cantwell (Star Trek: Defiant, Star Trek: Red Shirts) and talented artist Dennis Menheere (Etheres, Little Nightmares), IDW’s Star Trek (2026) is an ongoing series with no confirmed total issue count, meaning readers can expect more adventures to come. While the first issue launched in September, Star Trek #2 isn't expected to hit comic shelves until November 18, 2026.

This new era of Star Trek will take readers beyond the known galaxy and into an unexplored region of space called the Epsilon Corridor, as the Enterprise-G embarks on a desperate mission to find a new home for the dying Avuran people. IDW Publishing teases that this first arc will deliver “a prestige, mystery-driven, high-stakes psychological thriller of an opening salvo — new worlds, new species, new existential threats — anchored by Seven, Jack, and Crash La Forge fighting to keep the mission together as the Galaxy's oldest ghosts awaken.”

As previously mentioned, Star Trek #1 has already hit comic shelves, and the reviews are in, with the inaugural issue receiving a generally positive response from fans. The issue has earned a 3.8-star rating on League of Comic Geeks, with most readers pleased with the series' start and optimistic about its potential to become something truly interesting. If you haven't had a chance to dive into the first issue yet, you can find its official synopsis below:

Their mission is new. Their legacy is not.

The Enterprise-G is on a desperate mission beyond the known Galaxy to relocate the dying Avuran people when its crew finds a perfect new home in a region of unknown space called the Epsilon Corridor. Three pristine Class-M worlds — the Trinity — await the refugees. No signs of civilization. No detectable threats. A colonist's dream. But the dream fractures fast.

When Captain Seven of Nine and her divided, fast-tracked crew begin exploring the Trinity, they uncover disturbing contradictions: vanished structures, inexplicable artifacts, time skips, and evidence of a presence Starfleet's century-old probes never detected. Each world houses a different ecosystem, different physics problems, and different secrets — as if they've been curated... or quarantined. But from who? Or what?

What makes this flagship series so exciting is that it is truly ushering in a new era for Star Trek fans. As the flagship title in IDW Publishing's larger Star Trek relaunch, which also includes Star Trek: Zero Point, the series explores the future of Starfleet in an entirely new way by taking the franchise beyond the four known quadrants of the galaxy while simultaneously establishing a new generation of heroes for Star Trek.

However, rather than relying entirely on the original Enterprise crews, the comic builds on the ending of Star Trek: Picard Season 3, making it feel like a genuine continuation of the franchise's legacy rather than a hard reboot. The premise also brings readers back to one of the core themes that has defined Star Trek for decades: the spirit of exploration.

This is truly an exciting new era for Star Trek, and the series has the potential to deliver the continuation of Star Trek: Picard Season 3 that so many Trekkies have been waiting for.
