Final Fantasy 6 Officially Making A Comeback October 2026

When it was first launched back in 1994 for the SNES, Final Fantasy 6 quickly became regarded as one of the greatest video games of all time, a sentiment which is still maintained to this day. It may have been over 30 years since its launch, but the sixth mainline entry in Square Enix's Final Fantasy franchise still welcomes an impressive fanbase, with players agreeing about its stunning soundtrack, story, characters, and gameplay.

Helping mark a turning point for the RPG genre, Final Fantasy 6 truly was a landmark title, and though a modern-day remake is seemingly not on the cards over at Square Enix, fans will be happy to learn that the game is set to make a return, albeit not in the way that many of us would initially hope.

On 22 October 2026, Final Fantasy fans can look forward to the first HD-2D entry in the franchise as an adaptation of 2015 mobile game Final Fantasy Brave Exvius's first story arc, "Lapis", is set to launch as Final Fantasy Resonance. Developed by Square Enix and Lancarse, it is set to launch on Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Windows later this year with a demo launching earlier this month to give players a sneak peek at the next Final Fantasy entry.

So what do Final Fantasy 6 and Final Fantasy Resonance have in common? Especially as it is over thirty years between the two entries. Well, Square Enix has decided to provide fans with a nod to the beloved 1994 SNES as part of Final Fantasy Resonance's Digital Deluxe Edition. As such, ordering this edition will allow players to change the Chocobo on the world map into Magitek Armor from Final Fantasy VI. It is not the Final Fantasy 6 remake that we would all love, but it is nice to see the studio include Easter eggs that fans of the original entries would recognize, even if that means having to splash the cash on the Digital Deluxe Edition of Final Fantasy Resonance.

Nevertheless, that did not stop fans from sharing their thoughts on this crossover, and they took to the comments to share their thoughts. "Oh they knew exactly what they were doing with this one," one comment read. Another agreed, adding, "Okay, that's really f**king cool."

With many saying that they were not planning on pre-ordering or purchasing the Digital Deluxe Edition until seeing this exclusive cosmetic, it seems as though Square Enix does really know what it is doing.
