Who Are Anthony Black’s Parents? Meet The Family Behind The Orlando Magic Guard

Translate

Anthony Black grew up as the kid who was good at everything, and it all started at home. His parents, Terry and Jennifer Black, were both Division I athletes, and they raised three children around sports, travel and competition. The Magic guard has said more than once that his mother carried the family through the hard years. Here is a look at the two people behind the No. 6 pick of the 2023 draft.

Two college athletes and a childhood across two countries

Anthony was born on Jan. 20, 2004, in Texas. His father, Terry, was a basketball standout at Baylor, where he still holds the career steals record at 2.55 a game, and he was inducted into the school's Hall of Fame in 2015. His mother, Jennifer, played soccer at Texas and Baylor. Anthony has a younger brother, Edward, who plays basketball, and a sister who runs track.

Terry played overseas for many years, so when Anthony was 10 months old the family moved to Germany. By age 3 he was fluent in German and even spoke it in his sleep. Jennifer brought the kids back to the United States before kindergarten, and the family settled near Dallas. His parents later split, and Anthony was raised mostly by his mother.

The mother who kept him focused

Jennifer played several sports growing up, and she pushed her children to do the same. Anthony played baseball, soccer and football before basketball, and he was a four-star wide receiver with college offers. She believes that mix helped him become an NBA player, and it kept him from burning out.

Money was tight at times, and Anthony remembers how hard she worked to shield her kids from it. “She's always done everything for me and my brother,” he has said. “She taught me good humility and how to be humble.” He also credits her with teaching him to see the good in things instead of the worst.

At home, nobody went easy on him. His older sister and cousins never let him win, which he says made him tougher and gave him his hatred of losing. Jennifer says he sometimes seems to hate losing more than he likes winning.

Anthony starred one year at Arkansas, then went sixth overall to Orlando in 2023. His parents have been a steady presence courtside ever since.
