Christine Baranski still has no idea whether Mamma Mia 3 is "actually happening"

It's been nearly a decade since Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again was released, and unfortunately we are no closer to knowing if a follow-up to the musical film will be coming in the near future.

Despite producer Judy Craymer confirming - and reiterating - that a third film in the franchise was in development, it remains to be seen if fans will get the chance to sing along to more ABBA songs.

Such is the quietness surrounding the project, Christine Baranski - who played Tanya Chesham-Leigh in both the 2008 film and its 2018 sequel - admitted that she was unsure if a third film would ever come.

Speaking on the Table Manners podcast with Jessie and Lennie Ware, the actor, who has also appeared in The Good Fight and The Gilded Age, said: "Everybody asks about it. Judy is working on it.

"I can only say - I've always been reluctant to say anything because it goes viral and it spreads like brushfire even if you say 'maybe' - everybody, especially the gays, they say 'Oh no, it's happening!'

"I don't know if it's happening, but Donna Langley, who is the head of Universal Studios - she greenlights projects - was actually on a red carpet saying, 'Yes, there will be a Mamma Mia 3'"

When asked if she wanted a third film to eventually see the light of day, Baranski added: "They better [make it]! That would be so great to go back to Greece, that would be so much fun."

Langley, who is the chairperson at NBCUniversal Entertainment, offered a positive update on the musical back in February, noting: "I'm going to say right now that there will be a Mamma Mia 3."

She also added that she had been in discussions with Craymer, and also teased the possibility that Meryl Streep could reprise her role as Donna Sheridan despite the character's death.

While Streep may return, Stellan Skarsgård could opt out of reprising his role as Bill Anderson, with the actor quipping: "I don't know if they'll be able to transport me to the set. I'm so old, I'll probably be dead when it happens. I'll come as ashes and play it from an urn."
