Ballon d’or 2026: De la Fuente wins coach of the Year Award after Spain’s World Cup triumph

Translate

Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente has been named the 2026 Men’s Coach of the Year at the Ballon d’Or ceremony in London, capping a remarkable year in which he led the national team to FIFA World Cup glory.

The 65-year-old claimed the Johan Cruyff Trophy on Monday, October 26, after Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 in the World Cup final on July 19, securing the country’s second men’s world title.

De la Fuente’s latest achievement adds another major honour to a coaching career that has flourished since he took charge of Spain’s senior national team in December 2022.

His World Cup success has also placed him among the most accomplished coaches in Spanish football, following the country’s victories at the 2023 UEFA Nations League and Euro 2024.

De la Fuente beats coaching heavyweights

The Spanish tactician emerged ahead of an impressive shortlist featuring Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, Paris Saint-Germain’s Luis Enrique, Aston Villa boss Unai Emery and Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany.

The award recognises De la Fuente’s work in guiding Spain through a successful international campaign, culminating in victory over Argentina in a dramatic final that was decided in extra time.

Spain secured the trophy through Ferran Torres’ 106th-minute strike after Argentina had held them goalless during normal time.

The victory also made De la Fuente the oldest coach to win the men’s FIFA World Cup, at 65 years and 28 days, surpassing the previous record held by compatriot Vicente del Bosque, who led Spain to the 2010 title.

Spain’s historic World Cup campaign

Spain’s triumph was built on a disciplined and largely dominant tournament performance.

De la Fuente’s side went unbeaten throughout their eight matches at the expanded 2026 World Cup, conceding just one goal during the competition.

Goalkeeper Unai Simón also recorded seven clean sheets, setting a tournament record for the most shutouts by a goalkeeper in a single men’s World Cup edition.

Spain’s victory over Argentina further strengthened the country’s position among international football’s leading forces, adding the world title to its recent continental and international successes.

The achievement also made Spain the first country to hold the men’s and women’s FIFA World Cup titles simultaneously, following the women’s team’s triumph in 2023.

A new milestone for Spain’s coach

The Johan Cruyff Trophy gives De la Fuente individual recognition for the success he has overseen with Spain, following years of development work within the country’s national-team system.

Before taking charge of the senior side, he worked with Spain’s youth teams, helping develop players who have since become central to the national team’s success.

His senior-team achievements include the 2023 Nations League, Euro 2024 and the 2026 World Cup, a run of major honours that has established his reputation among Europe’s leading international coaches.

The 2026 award also places a national-team manager at the top of a category whose previous winners came from the club game, marking a significant moment for international coaching.

For De la Fuente, the recognition completes an extraordinary year in which Spain returned to the summit of world football and his work on the touchline earned one of the sport’s most prestigious individual coaching honours.
