NGCP: Visayas grid under yellow alert on Sept. 22, 2026

The Visayas power grid will be placed on yellow alert Tuesday afternoon to evening, raising the possibility of power interruptions due to the unavailability of several power plants while others are running at derated capacity.

In an advisory, the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) said a yellow alert is hoisted over the island cluster from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.

A yellow alert is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement.

The Visayas grid is operating at 2,504 megawatts (MW) against a peak demand of 2,419 MW.

The grid operator cited the following factors that contributed to the yellow alert declaration:

• Unavailability of Visayas' large coal plants TVI 1, PEDC 3, and KSPC
• Derated capacity of CEDC 3 at 36MW
• Limited power import from the Mindanao grid.

The NGCP said 13 plants are on forced outage in September, three plants since August 2026, two plants since June, six plants since May, three plants since 2025, two plants since 2024, two plants since 2023, and one plant since 2021, while 16 plants are running at derated capacity.

The plants on outage and derated capacities resulted in a total of 928.4 MW of capacity unavailable to the Visayas grid. —AOL, GMA News
