It is a historic day for Africa and Senegal. For the first time ever, an Olympic competition is being held on African soil. The Youth Olympic Games officially got underway in Senegal in the Dakar region on Saturday, with an opening ceremony attended by 30,000 people. The competition, which brings together 2,700 athletes aged between 14 and 17, will take place across three Senegalese cities, with 25 sports on the programme.

In La Liga, Barcelona thrashed Alavés 6-1, just one week after losing the Clasico against Real Madrid. In England, Manchester United continue to struggle, while Brighton are maintaining their impressive run of form.

In Formula 1, Lewis Hamilton claimed his first pole position with Ferrari following an outstanding qualifying session at the Mexico City Grand Prix.

In the WNBA, the Golden State Valkyries clinched the title, thanks in part to an outstanding performance from France’s Gabby Williams, who scored 30 points in the decisive game 7.
